ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Collage Art on Painted Furniture

Most of my life I have focused my creative energy on the art of dance, but since 2004 I have redirected some of my choreographic energies into the making ofcollage art furniture. I love that furniture is so body-oriented! Stools have long legs; chairs have strong backs. My art furniture pieces can be used, touched, and sat upon. Images appear on unexpected surfaces. Titles are generally on the bottom. I take pleasure in creating the visual designs, creating spatial relationships between the images, and creating art on every surface to make an overall artistic statement.

The thematic content varies, but in general my aim is to invoke humor, beauty, and healing. I begin with used furniture pieces that appeal to me because of their unusual shape configurations. I then spend time envisioning their potential transformation. My sense of an appropriate color palette for each piece develops as I research images for the collage. After painting and affixing images, each piece is finished to a high gloss such as is used for commercial bar and tabletops. Thus each art furniture piece is functional as well as artistic.
